Phase I Controlled dispersion validation - Year 1 Activities • Mesocosm experiments to help test durability of the sensor/cable itself against biofouling and corrosion due to immersion and ocean biota • Consultation and mesocosm experiments to help inform the impact of measurement depth on the dynamic range of pH from non-mCDR processes, to aid in design of sensor depth (cable length) to enable high signal-to-noise ratio measurement • URI will enable installation and application of GE-selected sensors in mesocosm tanks (i.e., different temperature, partial pressure of CO2, and alkalinity addition rate and magnitude) to enable temporal measurement of OAE-relevant parameters • URI will provide access to their benchtop instrument to measure dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity to calibrate GR-selected sensors • URI will monitor OAE’s ecosystem impacts in the mesocosm tanks by evaluating biological parameters in the different OAE scenarios including phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll a concentration, species composition • Measurements will be made at least for 1 month in each of the 4 seasons to cover a broad dynamic range of environmental and biological conditions for sensor evaluation • URI will provide guidance and expertise to the GE team in the areas of carbon cycle and ecosystem impact related to OAE. Deliverables • Measurement and calibration data collected from mesocosm tanks • The ecosystem impacts of OAE in mesocosm tanks. • Analysis and inputs for report documents for program Phase II Sea trial validation- Year 2 Activities • Depending on ship availability, URI will evaluate OAE’s ecosystem impact during the one week field trial on R/V Endeavor, contingent on getting the Rhode Island Endeavor Program ship time. • URI will provide guidance and expertise in the areas of carbon cycle and ecosystem impact related to OAE. New Competitive Cooperative Agreement with GE Vernova Operations LLC, DE-FOA-0002989 (SEA CO2) Control# 2989-1534 Project Title: ''SPATIALLY RESOLVED MULTI-PARAMETER SENSING OF OCEAN CARBON DYNAMICS UTILIZING FIBER OPTIC TIME-OF-FLIGHT SENSORS.'' The primary objectives of the project are: i) to develop a novel fiber optic sensor for high fidelity measurement of marine pH and pCO2, ii) to design a distributed measurement system that spans kilometers horizontally with spatial resolution of 5 – 20 m and can be deployed vertically down to ~1 km depth, iii) to enable robust measurements disentangled from environmental disturbance and biological activity (i.e., photosynthesis and respiration), iv) to demonstrate durability against biofouling and other factors impacting long-term structural and measurement integrity of the system, v) to validate measurement performance on an existent mCDR field and vi) to illustrate scalability of the measurement system on large ocean expanses, based on mobile sweeping of the ocean, with a techno-economic analysis.Federal assistance hierarchy
