Agencies include cabinet-level departments, independent agencies, and certain commissions. Each agency operates under its own procurement regulations within the framework of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). Agencies are the primary buyers in the federal contracting process.

Understanding which agency is responsible for a contract is critical for market analysis, competitor research, and identifying procurement trends. Agencies have unique missions, procurement needs, and acquisition strategies, which influence contract opportunities and vendor engagement. Accurate agency identification helps analysts target business development efforts and interpret spending patterns.

In FPDS data, the awarding agency is typically identified by its name and a unique agency code. Users can filter, group, or search contract records by agency to analyze spending, contract volume, or vendor participation specific to that organization.
